Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system, which includes lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow, and immune tissues. It mainly includes Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, each with multiple subtypes. Symptoms often include painless swelling of lymph nodes, fever, night sweats, weight loss, fatigue, itching, or recurrent infections. Lymphoma develops when abnormal lymphocytes grow uncontrollably and interfere with immune function. Diagnosis involves biopsy, blood tests, PET scan, CT scan, and bone marrow studies when needed.
Treatment depends on subtype and stage and may include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, radiation therapy, or stem cell transplant in selected cases. Many lymphomas respond very well to treatment, especially when diagnosed early. Advances in immunotherapy and biological treatments have significantly improved outcomes in both aggressive and slow-growing lymphoma types.
